Message from His Excellency the Minister

Dear visitors and users of the website,
Welcome to the website of the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum of Mauritania.
The development of the energy and oil sectors is a key lever for economic and social growth, particularly in countries with significant energy and petroleum resources, such as Mauritania.
Thanks to the structural reforms implemented by the Mauritanian government to improve the business climate and capitalize on the investment opportunities offered by recent gas discoveries, as well as the promotion of the country's renewable energy resources and its strategic partnerships in the hydrogen sector, Mauritania has strengthened its position as a preferred partner for investment in large long-term projects. Among these projects is the development of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas field, in partnership with the Republic of Senegal, BP, Kosmos Energy, and other contracting companies. We have successfully advanced this project to the production phase, which could last for several decades.
Recent discoveries, geological surveys, and seismic studies have also confirmed the presence of significant gas reservoirs in several blocks, including the BirAllah field, located in our territorial waters. This opens up promising prospects for the creation of a gas hub in Mauritania.
As part of the implementation of reforms and strengthening the legal framework, a new Investment Code has been adopted, accompanied by a comprehensive revision of the Commercial Code, aimed at ensuring better protection for investments.
The new Electricity Code has opened up significant opportunities for the private sector to invest in the production, transport, and distribution of electricity. In the same dynamic, our ministry has conducted numerous consultations with partners in a participatory approach. This led to the adoption by Parliament of a Hydrogen Code, the first of its kind on the African continent, as well as a Local Content Code for the extractive industries.
Furthermore, the Codes for Oil, Mining, and Public-Private Partnerships have been developed to strengthen the legal framework, making it more attractive, competitive, and protective for investors and stakeholders in the energy, oil, and extractive industries.
Regarding renewable energy, we have overseen the restructuring of the sector, enabling Mauritania to reach a 42% share of clean renewable energy. With its renewable energy potential and the policies adopted in the hydrogen sector, Mauritania prioritizes the production of green steel in the shortest possible time, especially since our country has vast iron reserves estimated at 10 billion tons.
As part of policies for responsible governance and promoting transparency, Mauritania joined the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) early, in 2005, and continues to comply with the transparency rules required by this international organization. At the last Transparency International conference, our country was recognized for its efforts in information dissemination and the automatic publication of data related to the extractive sectors.
