Inauguration of the Headquarters of the Renewable Energy and Rural Electrification Unit
As part of efforts to achieve sustainable development and ensure universal access to electricity by 2030, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Khaled, Minister of Energy and Petroleum, inaugurated this morning at the Ministry's headquarters in Nouakchott, the headquarters of the Renewable Energy and Rural Electrification Unit, alongside the UNDP Resident Representative in Mauritania, Mr. Mansour Ndiaye.
This unit was established and equipped with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in close collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum. The initiative aims to accelerate the implementation of rural electrification programs using solar energy, in line with efforts to promote the transition to renewable energy sources, contributing to achieving the country’s strategic goals.
The inauguration of this important facility is part of the joint program signed between the Ministry and the UNDP last year, aimed at electrifying 200 rural villages through the establishment of solar energy stations, enhancing the ability of rural areas to access electricity sustainably.
This inauguration embodies the energy sector's commitment to promoting sustainable rural development and relying on renewable energy as a strategic option to ensure electricity access for citizens across the country, with a firm goal of achieving universal access to electricity by 2030.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, the Director General of the Electricity Department, as well as several ministry staff and UNDP representatives.
