His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, chaired this evening in Nouakchott the launch of the construction works for a new 60-megawatt power plant, marking a significant step in strengthening Mauritania's energy infrastructure.
This project is part of a strategic vision aimed at meeting the growing electricity demand and enhancing the country's energy sovereignty.
In his speech on this occasion, the Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mr. Mohamed Ould Khaled, stated that this new power plant will significantly contribute to increasing the capacity of the existing combined plant, raising production from 180 to 240 megawatts, which will improve the national electricity supply. He specified that the project is entirely financed through the state budget, with a total cost estimated at approximately 82 million dollars (32 billion old ouguiyas). He added that the works are expected to be completed within 15 months.
This new project comes at a crucial time as the government is pursuing several major energy projects, including another 60-megawatt renewable energy plant, the expansion of the Boulenoir wind farm (+20 megawatts through batteries), and the construction of gas-fired power plants.
