Projects under study and development

Mauritania is experiencing a renaissance in electricity generation projects, with the government working to expand its production capacity through the construction of new gas and solar energy plants. Among the major projects underway are:
• A power generation plant operating on natural gas and heavy fuel oil.
• A gas-fired power plant with a capacity of 225 MW, which will enhance electricity supply stability and reduce production costs.
• A 60 MW solar power plant, which will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in the national grid.
• Another 220 MW solar power plant, which will support achieving energy self-sufficiency from clean sources.
Mauritania is also looking to expand its investments in renewable energy electricity production to ensure a sustainable and low-cost supply, while enhancing its position as a regional center for clean energy production.

High-Voltage Lines: Developing Strong Infrastructure for Electricity Transmission

Recognizing the importance of enhancing electricity transmission and ensuring grid stability, Mauritania has undertaken the creation and development of several high-voltage lines essential for linking different regions of the country and ensuring electricity access for consumers.
Among the lines completed or under construction are:
• The line connecting Nouadhibou to Nouakchott: This improves distribution efficiency and the stability of the electricity grid between the north and the capital.
• The line connecting Nouakchott to Keur-Massar in Senegal: This contributes to improving regional energy cooperation and strengthening electricity trade with Senegal.
• The line connecting Zouerate to Nouakchott: This is progressing and will provide electricity to mining areas while linking them to the national grid.
• The line connecting Nema to Nouakchott: This is in several stages, with parts completed in collaboration with the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS), and preparations are underway to complete its remaining phases.
This expansion of electricity transmission networks aims to ensure energy supply, reduce electricity losses, and improve the quality of services provided to consumers.

Electrical Interconnection with Neighboring Countries: Strengthening Regional Energy Integration

Mauritania places great importance on developing electricity interconnection projects with its neighbors, given their essential role in enhancing energy security and strengthening regional cooperation in the electricity sector. Among these projects are:
• Electrical interconnection with Senegal: This aims to ensure supply stability and exchange electricity between the two countries through the line connecting Nouakchott to Keur-Massar, thereby enhancing energy integration in West Africa.
• Electrical interconnection with Morocco: Mauritania is seeking to explore ways to connect its electricity grid to Morocco, allowing it to benefit from the advanced electricity infrastructure in North Africa and strengthen electricity exchange between the two countries.
• Electrical interconnection with Mali: Mauritania is developing cooperation projects with Mali to improve energy supply in the Sahel region and support economic development in both countries.
• Cooperation with the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS): Mauritania benefits from a significant share of electricity generated through the organization's projects, which helps increase the share of energy mix and enhance the sustainability of electricity supplies.
