Gas To Power

As part of its strategy to diversify energy sources and strengthen energy security, Mauritania has adopted an ambitious vision to exploit its abundant gas resources for electricity production, as part of the "Gas to Power" approach. This vision is part of a comprehensive national plan aimed at benefiting from major gas discoveries in the coastal basin, including the "Panda," "GTA," and "Bir Allah" fields, to meet the country's energy needs sustainably and at lower costs.
This strategy is based on the creation of an integrated infrastructure to transport gas from the sea to production plants. Major projects have been announced, including the construction of a 75 km subsea pipeline linking the Panda field to Nouakchott, converting the current power plant (180 MW) to a gas-powered system, as well as building a new 240 MW plant and other facilities. The plan also includes the development of industrial units to convert gas into clean energy derivatives such as methanol and compressed gas, opening the door for using gas in transportation, industry, and agriculture.
Through this plan, Mauritania aims to direct electricity produced from gas towards stimulating heavy metal industries in the north of the country, especially those related to iron, copper, and gold mining, while also providing other industrial sectors with stable and clean electricity. This transition is expected to enhance the competitiveness of national industries, reduce production costs, create a favorable investment environment, reduce dependence on imported fuels, and lower carbon emissions, aligning with the country's sustainable development goals and energy transition.
